Canada’s backlog of immigration applications was 1.8 million applications as of December
The backlog has risen by 21,000 applications in two months.
IRCC holds greater than 1.8 million applications on the queue, according the data from December.
The sum of these categories adds up to an application backlog of 1,813,144 in December. The month of October was when IRCC announced a backlog of 1,791,936. This means that the backlog has risen by over 21,000 applications for immigration in the span of just 49 days, an increase of one percent.
In the majority the categories listed, excluding citizens, the latest figures reflect the inventory of the IRCC at the time of December 15, 2021

Backlogs for Family and Express Class are reduced Backlogs for refugees increase
In December December’s Express Entry backlog was at over 119,000, as compared to the month of October, when it was close to 138,000.
The biggest difference was seen on Canadian Experience Class (CEC) applications, which were down to around 250,000 applications in December as in comparison to over 48,000 applications in the month of October. It was also noted that the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) backlog also decreased by 805 applicants in the queue for December against 931 in the October queue.
The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) backlog grew to around 55,000 by December, but it was close to 51,000 by October. Also, there was an improvement in the upgraded Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) backlog of 39,000 in December as compared to 38,000 in the month of October.
Family class applications for the entire year were lower, averaging 105,000, in December, as in contrast to over 111,000 during October. This includes programs such as spouse sponsorship that was slightly down but still around 55,000 applicants as well as PGP, the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) which dropped to around 38,000, from more than 43,000.
In December the number of applications for protected people (refugees and asylum seekers in Canada) was estimated at 158,000. In October, there were approximately 153,000.
